I remember the first time I ever heard about affiliate marketing. It was one of those things that I thought I knew what it was, but I wasn’t quite sure. To be honest, I thought it was a lot more complicated than it really was. It takes some time to learn how to use affiliate marketing but with a little time and knowledge, you can make money from your blog too.
what is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing sounds like a dirty concept. You may have visions of highlighted text, spam, and pushy sales pitches when you think about affiliate marketing. But really, its nothing like that. Some people have used it to spam us sure, but at its core, affiliate marketing is a really great way to monetize your blog.
I’d like to change the name from affiliate marketing to partner marketing. What you are really doing is partnering with someone to help market their product.
How it works: let’s just say I created a blogging program. Because my program would be awesome I’d want as many people as possible to know about it and buy into it. So I decide to create an affiliate or partner program.
I will give others the opportunity to sell my program on their blog/website and give them a percentage of the sales they bring in. That’s the skinny on how affiliates and partners work. Simple concept, not always simple to make money this way.
how to find affiliate programs
I’d start with products, services, or programs you’ve used that you’ve found helpful in your business. It’s easier to sell and market something that you’ve actually used, know the benefits of, and that has added value to you or your biz in some way.
You can also join networks such as commission junction or share a sale where you can search for relevant affiliates. A relevant affiliate or partner is one who’s products or services will benefit your readers.
For instance. I am an affiliate of Go Daddy. Why? Because I use Go Daddy, trust their products and services, and I believe that my readers will also find value in what they have to offer. This is what you want when you decide to become a partner or a product or service.
how to use affiliate marketing effectively
Never promote a product or service you haven’t used. Not on your blog. Your blog is a place where you are building trust, gaining credibility, and adding value. It’s your “duty” to be honest and forthcoming with your readers. Telling them to buy something that you have never tried is a little sneaky and could backfire and hurt your reputation.
The best way to market a product is to talk about it in a blog post. For instance in this post I talk about Go Daddy and the benefits of hosting with them. I am not just trying to make a dime off of my readers, but I am offering real advice and truly believe in the product I am marketing.
Essentially, all I am doing is telling others the tools I use to make my blog a success. And at the same time making a little money. Call it what you want, but us bloggers put a lot of time into what we do, we shouldn’t feel slimy for wanting to profit a little.
some programs I use and recommend
