I’m about to call bullshit. (Like I am right now. Consider this the call)
Blog advice comes a dime a dozen. For new bloggers its overwhelming trying to decipher what to do, what not to do, what advice is golden, and what advice they should throw to the shitter.
The blog advice you should ditch
Blogging more often increases your traffic.
You will kill yourself trying to keep up. You don’t have to write everyday to have a successful blog. You do however, have to market everyday.
RSS Feeds are important
Side note: growing an email list of your readers is where it’s at. Here’s how to grow your list
You should comment other blogs x amount of times a day
There is some myths floating around out there about the importance of commenting on other blogs to get valuable backlinks to your site…
Just stop. Don’t stop commenting on blog posts you enjoy and want to interact with, but stop using it as a strategy to build backlinks. You are technically building them, but they are not very valuable. All links are not created equal <-go read this to learn more.
Your time is better spent elsewhere and as bloggers the thing we want most is time. So you have to learn to use it wisely and not to waste it on things that don’t bring the best results.
You should focus on traffic
This is not always true. Traffic is great, and you obviously can’t get very much accomplished if no one is seeing your blog, but traffic is not an indicator of success. What should be of more importance to you is conversions. How often are people doing what you want them to do on your site?
Are they signing up to recieve your emails?
Are they buying your products or services?
Are they interacting with you in the comments?
Are they visiting your content landing pages and staying on your site longer?
Focus on what your visitors are doing on your site. It’s not always quantity, it’s quality.
The best blog advice you will ever get
Treat your blog like a business. You will never make money blogging if you treat it as a hobby. Lets get real, how many of your hobbies are making you rich?
Didn’t think so.
I read an article the other day about treating your blog like a business and it resonated with me, so I figured I would share with you.
Truth be told (and I always tell the truth), this is the exact reason you are not making money with your blog. You’re still playing “hobby” with your blog instead of making it your… Oh nevermind.
You can never be your own boss if you don’t act like you have a business. Nuff said.
